Sugin’s Corner Presents:  How I Clean My Vented Dryer in Germany

Spouse Information Center #11

Question:  My dryer seems to take longer, and sometimes it doesn’t thoroughly dry my clothes. Am I doing something wrong?

Note:  I am not a maintenance person or an appliance repair person.

Sugin’s Reply:  Depending on the dryer you have, there might be a few different reasons why the dryer takes longer, and sometimes your clothes don’t get thoroughly dry.

I recommend learning what kind of Dryer you have and reading its manual. Did you know there are three different types of Dryers? They are:  vented dryers, condenser dryers, and washer dryer combo.

If you don’t know what kind of dryer you have or you don’t have a manual, you look on the side of the door and should see numbers. Then type the brand and model into google to get the manual. You can also go to the company’s website that made the washer to find the manual.

I have a Vented Dryer; here are a few reasons why my Vented Dryer may not be drying my clothes thoroughly.

  1. Overloading the dryer with too many wet clothes.
  2. The dryer sensor might be broking. Contact repair technician!
  3. Dryer filter has lint covering the screen.
  4. Lint-free dryer filter has no airflow due to being dirty.
  5. Dryer hose (dryer to wall) clogged with lint.
  6. Dryer lint trap housing (inside the door) clogged with lint.
  7. Incorrect settings.

Tips and reminders:

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, clothes dryers are linked to thousands of fires every year, causing death and injury that makes it even more important to keep the lint trap clean.

In this video and blog, I will show how I clean my Vented Dryer and below are different dryer settings. Make sure to turn off or unplug your dryer before you start.

To help your clothes dry correctly don’t overfill the dryer. I do an extra spin cycle on my washer to help my clothes dry better. Make sure you understand the dryer settings.

Needed cleaning items and tools:

  1. Vacuum with thin hose attachments.
  2. Hot water.

Steps:

How to clean the dryer filter.

***You must clean and wash the lint/fluff off your dryer filter after every use. If water can’t flow the vent, air cannot flow as easy causing your dryer to work harder and longer to dry your clothes. ***

Steps:

Washing the Filter.

  1. Take out drier filter; make sure to clean off any lint/fluff on the screen before washing.
  2. Next, raise filter under hot running water.
  3. Make sure the whole filter is clear of any lint and water runs entirely through the mesh filter.

Cleaning Lent Trap Housing

  1. Using the very long thin pipe brush cleaner, clean out extra dust or lint that may be clogging the vent area.
  2. If possible try using a vacuum attachment to suck out any excess lint that may be clogging the vent area.

Cleaning the Dryer Duct Hose:

*Clean the dryer exhaust air duct and hose regularly about twice a month. This help to prevent fire and helps your dryer run better. *

  1. Make sure dryer is cooled down and unplug.
  2. Carefully pull out dryer allowing you enough from to take off exhaust hose. My hose unscrews from both the wall vent and vent on the back of the dryer.
  3. Once dryer hose is pulled off, clean and check for holes, you may need to replace the hose if crushed or punctured.
  4. Next, check the vent on the back of the dryer. There may be lint/fluff clogging the area.

Understanding German to American settings.

Here is information from our dryer’s manual. I found and printed my English version.

Condenser Tumble Dryer

I did find this fantastic video on “How a condenser tumble dryer works & How to diagnose problems” link to video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADPbjb_UOIw.

Here is a kit for a Condenser Dryer that can also help dry your clothes during the warm summer months.  Universal Vented Tumble Dryer Condenser Kit Damper kit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuWRuBfv-_w.

I hope this enables you to learn more about your condenser dryer and work out any problems you may be having

I would love to hear from you; please share your ideas and tips in the comments below. If you have a question, please email me at Sue@suginscorner.com.  In the subject line, please title your email “Question for Spouse Information Center.”  The reason I am calling this the Spouse Information Center and not Sugin’s got the answer;  is I do not have all the answers, and I have not been stationed all over the world. I encourage others who are stationed overseas to make a video to contribute to the Spouse information Center and help expand our library of topics.
